A Guide to Home Styles

If you’re just getting started on your home buying journey, you may be wondering what kind of home is going to match your needs. Is a ranch best for you and your lifestyle, or are contemporary homes more of what you’re drawn to? To help in your search, we’ve put together this handy guide to common home designs in our area.

Colonial

Colonial homes are one of the most popular home styles. The floor plan features the living, dining and kitchen areas on the first floor and at least three bedrooms upstairs. There are many styles of colonial homes including Tudor, Victorian, Georgian, etc.

Cape Cod

Popular with first-time homebuyers and downsizers alike, Cape Cod style homes are some of the more affordable home styles in our area. You’ll usually find two bedrooms upstairs and one or two bedrooms downstairs in this style home.

Ranch

Often sitting on large properties, ranch homes are single story homes with usually a more open layout. Bedrooms and living areas are all on the same floor and many in our area offer basements, either finished or partially-finished. Mostly built in the 1950s/1960s, a ranch is perfect for those who want to enjoy single level living or add a level.

Bi-Level

Bi-Level homes are characterized by one half staircase leading up to the main living area, and another half staircase leading to the lower level. The upper/main living floor includes kitchen and bedrooms, and the bottom floor would feature a bedroom, additional living space and garage access.

Split Level

In a split Level home, you’ll find staggered floor levels with short staircases leading to each floor. The floor plan is divided amongst multiple levels - with stairs from the main living area leading up to the bedroom area and a set leading down to additional living space at ground level. Some split-level homes in our area include basements.

Contemporary

A minimalistic style with a sleeker aesthetic, contemporary homes feature oversized windows and a lot of natural light. You’ll find clean, geometric shapes in design and usually with more open spaces within.
